California State University Northridge Managing the Interaction Paper

California State University Northridge Managing the Interaction Paper

Question Description

Throughout the course, as we have learned about nonverbal communication, we have focused on the individual parts of nonverbal communication. We have examined specific topics such as the environment, use of space, physical appearance, touch, gestures, etc. In reality, nonverbal communication requires us to consider how these component parts work together. Your authors refer to this as “multisignalic effects.”

Chapter 12 differs from the previous chapters in that it emphasizes how nonverbal messages result from these component parts working together. Knapp et al. demonstrate the multisignalic focus relative to five thematic areas. You are required to select ONE of the following themes and write a summary of the selected theme. Options include:

1. Communicating Intimacy

2. Communicating Dominance and Status

3. Managing the Interaction

4. Communicating Our Identity

5. Deception

First, select ONE of these five themes. Then, write a summary of the section from the chapter. Issues you might consider are: What are the key ideas in the section? What does this section add to your understanding of nonverbal communication? What are the significant nonverbal concepts that are presented in this section? How do various nonverbal components work together relative to your selected thematic area in terms of multisignalic effects? You are free to explore any idea you wish in your paper, but you are required to demonstrate that you engaged with the material in a significant and original way.

Requirements:

In the upper right hand corner, provide only your name (no title is needed). Skip a line, indent the first paragraph, and begin your essay response. Continue to use paragraphs to organize your material. Papers must be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, black ink, with standard margins on all sides.
