evidence from class readings, lectures, and additional/outside readings/research. You will need to cite and

Essay ONE: Choose only 1 of the 3 to answer: 100 pts

1. Use gender/feminist critical theory to define and discuss gender logic, and discuss how gender logic affects

perceptions of what are appropriate men’s and women’s sport choices and options. Also, discuss how these

perceptions are perpetuated in our American society? You must use sources beyond lecture and power point

2. Use race critical theory to define and discuss race logic (racial ideology) in sport. Discuss how race logic

(racial ideology) leads to perceptions regarding race and sport choices, stacking and centrality, and/or sport

stereotyping. Also, discuss how these perceptions are perpetuated in our American society? You must use

sources beyond lecture and power point and you must cite references to support your response.

3. Discuss how sport and social class have interacted over the last 150 years in the United States? Use a

functionalist perspective to discuss how socialization into and through sport enhances and builds the

American culture and society. You must use sources beyond lecture and power point and you must cite

references to support your response.

Essay TWO: This one must be answered by everyone: 100 pts

1) Discuss how religion AND sport interact for you? To fully answer this you will need to discuss which

social science theoretical orientation(s) discussed in class most closely matches your views and opinions

about religion and sport, and why it matches. You will also need to discuss how your theoretical

orientation affects your views about religion and sport. Does your belief or non-belief in Jesus Christ as

your savior affect your sporting behavior? Why or why not? You need to show a scholarly interaction

between religious thoughts, texts and your theoretical orientation.

To discuss your beliefs you must identify which theoretical orientation you most identify (conflict,

functional, race critical, gender critical, social interactionist etc.). You must use sources beyond lecture

and power point and you must use scholarly sources to support your response.
