DISCUSSION – MUDDIEST POINT FOR CHAPTERS 4-5

Every week I will post a discussion board topic called the “Muddiest Point” where you all can post your answers to the following questions:

1. Which topic(s) do you feel that you understood the most in Chapters 4-5 and why?

2. Which topic(s) do you feel that you understood the least in Chapters 4-5 and why?

reply 1: The topic I understood the most from Chapter 4 & 5 were the formation of planets. It’s very eye opening in the sense that so much comes into consideration with the creation of a planet from the mass and gravitation pull of its star, to the distance from its star, and the matter that is left in residue of the stars’ creation from it’s nebula. Then seeing that there are so many different exoplanets and how there are other types of stars, some smaller than its orbiting planets, some have two stars, it goes to show that what we really know about planets is in comparison to the creation of our own solar system. The one thing the majority of our found planets have in common has that they are mainly composed of three layers like earth. They might be bigger, since the smaller planets or planets of our size are difficult to locate, but they eventually have the same composition.

The topic I understood the least from Chapter 4 & 5 was how do we find out how old a planet is. I know that we could get certain samples from a couple of planets, but when it came to exoplanets I didn’t quite understand how we could detect it’s age through just a visual representation.

reply2: 1. In chapter 4 I understood the factors that affect differences in elevation. Understanding the factors that affect differences in elevation on terrestrial planets is key to gaining insight into the geological processes that shape these worlds. One of the primary factors that influence elevation is the planet’s internal geology, including factors such as tectonic activity, volcanic processes, and the strength and composition of the planet’s crust. For example, the movement of tectonic plates on Earth has given rise to mountain ranges and deep ocean trenches, while volcanic activity has created vast volcanic plains and shield volcanoes. Additionally, the effects of erosion, weathering, and impact events can also play a significant role in shaping the elevation of a planet’s surface over time. By understanding the complex interplay of these and other factors, we can gain a deeper understanding of the geological history of terrestrial planets and the physical processes that have shaped them over millions of years.

2. In chapter 5 I am struggling with comparing the main characteristics of other planetary systems with the features of our own solar system. it seems to be a complex task, as there are many factors to consider when studying planetary systems, including the size and composition of planets, the shape and stability of planetary orbits, and the presence of other bodies such as moons, asteroids, and comets.
