In the essay, what problem does Plaskow identify, and what is her solution?
example answer:
In the ôanding Again at Sinai%ssay, Judith Plaskow discusses how women were portrayed in the Jewish community and the book of Torah. Women were invisible in Jewish society, which explains why their experiences are not mentioned in the books of Moses. In Exodus, Moses instructed Israelites not to go near a woman on the third day because it was a day to receive the covenant from God (p255). Besides, Plaskow addressed the Israelite community as men. This shows that women were not recognized in the community. The history of the Jewish shaped how women are treated in that community. Women were not allowed to express themselves. They had to eavesdrop on conversations among men and between men and God. Just as women were excluded in the text of the Torah, they have also been excluded in the Jewish community to date.
Plaskow calls for the recreation of a feminist Judaism to help women be visible in society. To achieve this, there is a need for women to establish a new relationship with the tradition. They should not be angry at traditions for excluding them from society; instead, they should empower themselves and others in communities (p256). The author also states that women should accept their absence from Sinai and allow men to define them in connection to Judaism. Furthermore, Plaskow urges women to stand on the grounds of their experiences and defend their membership in society. The author also encourages women to recreate their history and reshape Torah.
