Cover Letters and Resumes

A cover letter is your first opportunity to introduce yourself to a prospective employer. But how can you separate yourself from the 499 other applicants? With a strong, concise, and informative cover letter. 

Your cover letter should have the following sections:

A Header:

Name
Address
City, State, Zip Code
Phone Number
Email Address

Date

Employer Contact Information (if you have it)
Name
Title
Company
Address
City, State, Zip Code

Salutation:

Dear Mr. Smith:

First Paragraph:

The first paragraph of your letter should include information on why you are writing. Mention the position you are applying for and where you found the job listing. Include the name of a mutual contact, if you have one.

I am submitting my resume in response to your ad for an entry-level
Game Developer, which was posted on Monster.com.

OR

I received your information from Jim Beam, an employee with your company. He mentioned you were looking for an entry-level Game Developer and I would like to submit my resume for your consideration.

Second Paragraph:

The next section of your cover letter should describe what you have to offer the employer. Mention specifically how your qualifications match the job you are applying for. Remember, you are interpreting your resume, not repeating it. 

Customize it to the job description! Online applications will be ãreened&or matching words. Which means you, get auto-rejected before anyone sees your information.

I have 7 years experience as a Registered Nurse, and recently graduated from Nightingale College with a BSN in Nursing. As part of my education, I studied community nursing, leadership, policy, ethics, critical care, gerontology, health promotion, disease prevention, informatics, and other key nursing concepts. I also had the privilege of managing several projects and team experiences.

Third Paragraph:

Conclude your cover letter by thanking the employer for considering you for the position. Include information on how you will follow-up.
