Description

COMMENT TO EACH POST AND ASK QUESTION TO EACH POST:

1.The text emphasizes the importance of language: !nguage is the primary tool we use to pursue understanding. We create misunderstanding when we use language that labels a group of people (Koppelman, 2017).

Looking back on my childhood, I know many discriminatory terms were used habitually without being aware of them. There were even derisive and offensive terms, especially for people who are physically or intellectually challenged, were acceptable in society. For example, everyone called the ute glove&or the glove with four fingers attached. ute)s a derisive term for someone with a speech impairment who cannot speak. As another example, the term ental retardation7as easily used even by school teachers. The term entally retarded student(as gradually changed to ntellectually challenged student.
ore blatantly than this, people used derogatory terms, such as ¬ind,à%af,!nd !me. reviously tolerated and used indiscriminately, these terms are now considered insensitive or offensive.

sing inaccurate or ambiguous language creates problems when addressing sensitive, uncomfortable issues. It prevents us from clearly understanding our subject(Koppelman, 2017). Fortunately, schools and authorities are now recognizing that using these terms is wrong and are purifying them and educating students to use them.

2)Phrases that were “acceptable” when I was younger was “That’s/ You’re so gay.” This phrase is now very insensitive and has always been offensive to the lgbtq+ community. Being kids/teens this was a very common phrase and to say without thinking of how offensive it is. As the lgbtq+ community has grown bigger and stronger throughout the years it is, definitely something that kids/teens should not say. Kids growing up in this generation are now more open minded than when I was a kid. This phrase has always been offensive but was never taken seriously as kids and the offensiveness that can cause towards someone else. I feel like nowadays, it is easier for kids to comprehend that the phrase is offensive and should not be used. I have seen many documentaries were kids in this generation are able to identify themselves as a female when they were born male. I feel like back in the days, that was something that was not really expressed or supported enough as many are now which is a good thing now because kids are able to express themselves more without having too much fear of rejection. This change is for the better because kids can now know what can offend their classmates/ friends. I think that parents having conversations with their kids about these type of hurtful words and phrases can give a lot of knowledge to their kids.
