Vaid’s mission is to help people better care tor their family members by
using the proper looU, equipment, furniture, and home design. She leamed
from her experience as a family
caregiver to three near-rclalives that
the aging often live in an unsafe environment, and that the usual design of
homes, sucb as the position of fumilure, often works again.st lheir needs.
“If. for instance, sometinc has
a hearing problem, you should
arrange the furniture in a particu
lar way.” Vaid says. “You should
also have furniture with soft surfaces to absorb sound.”
Even though making changes
in the home would seem logiciil.
Vaid says the elderly often resist using .special equipment
because it highlights their vulnerability.
A study done by Retirement
Research Foundaiion. ba.sed in
Chicago, found that elderly peis(ins living in a single-family,
iielached house needed home
repair and home adaptations.
The choice not to make the
necessary adaptations in lhe
homes is based on fear¥gardless of the ekierly’s ability
