The driving question for SYN 1 has been, /w do we communicate about the climate crisis and related challenges in a manner that helps create the conditions for people to act? You will use class texts to answer this driving question or a related sub-question. For example, some of the readings may have you thinking about the inaction of people. After some thought your driving question may be, /w can we use communication to address the structural barriers and lack of resources that contribute to communities or peoples inaction?/p>

Project 2 provides an opportunity to work on the following learning goals:

learn how to put authors in conversation with each other

understand the use of argument in writingts function and purpose

• assess purpose, audience, and context (local vs. global) for different rhetorical situations

recognize and evaluate underlying assumptions and chains of reasoning that motivate arguments

• appreciate interconnections between appeals to reasoning, emotion, imagination, ethics, and credibility
• make a strong written claim based on textual analysis and support it with reasoning and textual evidence
• learn how to give and act on productive feedback to works in progress
• be introduced to the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes
• Step 1: Review the readings from the quarter and decide whether you want to focus on the driving question for the course or a sub-question. As you review the readings, think about how they speak to each other. Does one author extend the argument of another? Are authors indirectly discussing a point that you want to highlight?
• Step 2: In 4-6 pages, use the readings from class to answer your driving question. You should use t wotwo or three of the pieces we read or watched during the quarter to support the argument you pose in relation to this question. Itànot required, but if there is something you read for another class or in another context that feels relevant feel free to bring it in for additional support. By now you have begun to develop a process for planning your draft. If you¥ stuck or want to talk through your ideas, review the prewriting strategies from Sound Writing, attend your instructoràoffice hours, or meet with someone from the Writing Hub.
