Purpose

This proposal serves to launch you into your research and give you a greater, in-depth understanding of your topic for the Persuasive speech.  If done thoroughly, it will serve as the bones of your outline and give you the momentum to continue to become the expert of the topic in our class.

1. Identify main ideas and lines of inquiry related to your topic.
2. Identify initial areas of research.

Please copy and paste the following into your document, with your responses below to each item. Complete all questions (answer questions 4-7 in about 3-4 sentences)

1. State your claim of policy (see 17.2 (Links to an external site.))
2. State your specific purpose (see 6.4 (Links to an external site.)) (Take your time with this!  This is the most frequently required revision)
3. What organizational pattern will you use for your main points (simply state one of these: problem/solution, problem/cause/solution, Monroe’s Motivated Sequence)? (see 17.3 (Links to an external site.) of the textbook)
4. Describe the status quo (current situation) regarding your policy. What is the current policy? Is there a policy?
5. Problem/Need: Describe the problem with the policy.  What is broken? What is under attack? Consider this from as many angles as possible (social, political, economical, environmental, etc.)
6. Solution/Satisfaction: What solutions currently exist? Describe the solution are you proposing.  Did you find a proposal that you can support? Are there advocacy groups fighting for this cause whose proposal you can back?
7. What immediate action will you ask of your audience? (see 17.2? (Links to an external site.)
