Professional Situation: Communication practitioners are expected to keep up with current trends in the field and to know how these trends can be effectively implemented.

This paper will give other communication professionals an overview of what’s trending in the communication field. You will include recommendations that tell practitioners about how to use this trend in a specific communication situation.

What is a trend? A trend is an aspect of current practice that extends the core principles and strategies of our profession into a new communication channel or platform, new form of message, new visual format, new approach to crafting messages, etc. For example, a strategic communication plan is not a trend because it’s been part of our practice for a long time. Data visualization as part of a communication plan may be a new trend. Similarly, testing a communication campaign is not a trend, but using AI technology to do that testing is arguably a new trend.

Focus and Content of the Trend in Communication Paper

1. You will write a 4-6 page paper that explains to other communication practitioners why you believe the one trend you have selected is among important trends for one or more areas of communication practice.

*Include only ONE trend in the paper.

*State the purpose of the paper clearly in the introduction.

2. Specify the target readers of the Trend in Communication paper. What kind of readers will benefit most from reading your report? What type of communication field do they work in (e.g., health or political communication, public relations, corporate, activist, etc.)?

3. Describe and explain the communication trend clearly. Some readers may not know about the trend.

4. Briefly summarize relevant history for the trend – how did the trend emerge?

5. Case examples: offer specific, real-world examples of how the trend is happening and being implemented by people/organizations. Use these examples as evidence for your claims about the trend’s impact, scope, benefits, etc.

6. Explain the benefits and challenges of the trend in communication practice. These can include cost, effectiveness, engaging the target audience, etc.

7. Next, give several strategic recommendations about how practitioners can meet the challenges raised by this new trend to reach target audiences. Think about the first step that an organization might take to implement this trend. Consider what best practices the practitioners should apply when implementing this trend.

8. Research: Provide evidence from class readings and outside sources. Use a minimum of six sources. At least one of your sources should be a peer reviewed article from a communication/business journal. Because there is often a delay before peer reviewed articles are published, you may not find an article exactly on-point to your topic. In this case, you should find materials that relate to an aspect of your topic, such as audiences, technology, communication practice, etc.

9. Organization and Editing: Pay careful attention to organization, editing, and high-quality information.

10. The paper should be formatted following these guidelines: APA format: double-spaced, cover page, abstract, headers, page numbers, in-text citations, references page.
